“Gliese 667C” is a journey through different territories – not just created by the visitations of the musicians as they consider such traditions as Bali, West Africa, India and Morocco – but musical territories that are innovative and beyond geographic border. These are fresh and new, and the musicians’ excitement is palpable as the listener accompanies their pathfinding discoveries. Like its cosmic namesake, this album forges into a place strangely new yet tantilisingly habitable.

about

Gliese 667C is the name of both a red dwarf star and several of its orbiting planets in the Gliese 667 triple star system. The planets around 667C form one of the few solar systems found outside our own which could potentially support human habitation. This piece was written in dedication to Christof Griese, a great friend and wonderful saxophonist from Berlin. I have spent many pleasurable northern summers working in Berlin with Christof and our mutual musical friends. The first time that Christof and I toured together was coincidentally within only months of the discovery of the first planet in the Gliese 667C system. The opening portion of this piece has vibraphone and trombone performing slow planetary orbits around the gravity of a multi-tempo clave established in the bass and drums. After a vibraphone solo, the piece extends elements from the opening ostinato into new trajectories within the same clave cycle. The melody for this section has been set to harmonic progressions inspired by the compositions of two widely admired tenor saxophonists. After the improvised solos, the piece returns to its original harmonic and rhythmic orbits.
